It’s a word that we hear a lot, but what does it mean and is it important?
Organic refers to a method of farming and food production, where farmers prioritise systems that benefit the environment. In a nut shell, it’s the Gold Standard for anything that grows, and truthfully - almost anything that’s made, from skincare to clothing, food to toys.
Unlike conventional farming methods, farming organically supports healthier ecosystems, reduces pollution, helps to conserve water and protects the soil.
We are proud to share that our products are certified organic by the Soil Association.
Why is organic farming so important?
To be certified organic farms must avoid synthetic chemicals. Instead, organic farmers use natural methods to manage pests and enrich the soil, often working with wildlife rather than against it - a win-win for nature! By farming with nature in mind, organic practices help protect the environment while producing healthy, nutritious food.
Conventional farming practices take a huge toll on the environment. The commonly used chemicals (such as fertilisers and pesticides) are known to harm biodiversity, pollute waterways, and degrade soil health. Add these together with planting the same crops over and over on the same land, draining water supplies, and stripping the soil of its nutrients - it is no wonder that we are in an environmental crisis.
With estimates suggesting that by 2050, around 90% of the Earth’s soils could be degraded, it's clear that change is urgently needed. Human activities, especially conventional farming, are accelerating this decline by relying heavily on synthetic chemicals and practices that strip the soil of life. Organic farming offers a solution, which is why we choose to support organic farmers and use our buying powers to invest in a healthier planet.
The nutritional benefits
There are also several nutritional benefits associated with eating organic food in comparison to conventionally grown foods. With reduced exposure to synthetic pesticides and chemicals, many believe organic options support better long-term health. There is also an emerging body of research that's studying the relationship to soil health and our gut microbiome - watch this space!
